Then, The Orchids Turned Grey
Artist book consists of two-double sided volumes, 128 pages, hardcoverThe double-sided artist book invites viewers to examine the impact of Suharto’s coup on two generations of women in my family. Each chapter cover is marked by the year the coup began in 1965 and the year the regime ended in 1998, framing a historical arc that spans more than three decades. Both sides of the book open with the ethnic Chinese name from our maternal lineage that later was forcibly erased. The narrative moves from honoring my grandmother’s life after her death, in her house that no longer exists, to rediscovering my mother’s journey of motherhood under the New Order.
The Magnolia Grows at Night
Artist book, poetryThe Magnolia Grows at Night is drawn from a diary Fransisca Angela kept while making a film of the same title. The work was inspired by the friendship and letters between her oma and a Dutch nun who did missionary work in the Dutch East Indies. A decade after her oma’s death, Fransisca traced the address in Maastricht that led her to a convent, where a community of Indonesian nuns care for elderly Dutch nuns. A large magnolia tree stood inside the convent’s garden, witnessing the care duties and devoted lives these women have chosen to live. The artist book combines text in the form of prose, poetry, and fragments alongside archival images, and photograms of the magnolia petals from the convent’s garden.
